Health Effects
Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. What you can't see can hurt you and your family! Be safe. TEST
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) RADON Rn-222 and its Decay Products Polonium Po-218 and Po-214 are the leading contributing factors in lung cancer after cigarette smoking. The EPA estimates that there are about 20,000 lung cancer deaths related to Radon each year in the US.
Radon concentrates in homes and decays into forms of Polonium. These
elements discharge alpha particles in the lungs and damage critical
DNA in the cells. Inside tracheal-
bronchial passages and the alveoli
of the lungs an alpha strike can damage our DNA. That is why lung
cancer is the primary health issue with regard to Radon.
The health risk from Radon is that alpha emissions might distort the DNA of lung cells. Cancer is DNA run amuck
The total dose is what determines your risk factor. A
lesser dose over a
longer period of time or a greater
dose for a shorter time may yield a
similar risk factor.
